A summer visit to Historic Downtown Millersburg is reminiscent of simpler days in America. The annual Thunder Over Holmes County, for example, is an exciting, old fashioned Fourth of July celebration — only a few days early.
The popular festival, which will take place this year on Saturday, June 30, will include a pie eating contest, a lot of old fashioned games and plenty of free activities for the kids.
This year, the day-long party, which will conclude with a dazzling display of fireworks, will be supplemented by the return of the popular Moving Wall — the traveling half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The wall will be displayed from Friday, June 29, starting at 9 a.m., to Monday, July 2, with a special opening ceremony on Friday, June 29.
The emotion provoking Moving Wall gives people the opportunity to find the names of their loved ones and make a rub, just like at the Vietnam Memorial in Washington. When the wall debuted in Millersburg two years ago, a constant stream of people visited it 24 hours a day for four days. Many people chose to visit the wall late at night, or in the early morning when they could experience it at a time when it was more serene.
The Moving Wall, which will be set up at the Rails to Trails depot, will serve as an appropriate backdrop for the Thunder over Millersburg fireworks celebration.
Meanwhile, the event promises plenty to do for children — like bounce houses, slides, face painting and other activities on the courthouse lawn.
And it's all free.
Along with the kids’ activities, Thunder Over Holmes County will feature music, food and fun, from noon until the fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m.
You needn't hail from Holmes County to be a part of the celebration. Visitors love to come downtown to visit the unique shops, relax and enjoy a fun and patriotic celebration of America.
